Bio
Marcus Brownlow (b. 1965, Sheffield, UK) is a British-Australian visual artist based in Glasgow, UK. Working across photography and computation, he primarily creates pigment and digital C-Type prints on paper. He is best known for his minimal geometric works that engage directly with the possibilities of the digital image. His practice favours custom-coded processes as a means of creative control and conceptual inquiry.
His work explores the nature of the contemporary photographic image and its evolving relationship with technology. Characterised by a precise and reductive visual language, Brownlow’s compositions are oblique reinterpretations of the photograph. This methodical approach produces visually minimal yet conceptually rich works that exist on the boundary between representation and abstraction.
He has exhibited widely, including New Glasgow Society, Glasgow, UK; Access.space Gallery, Sheffield, UK; Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Ballarat, AU; and LoBe Gallery, Berlin, DE. His work is held in private collections in both the UK and Australia. In 2012, Brownlow participated in the PICTURE BERLIN artist residency.
